We first brought you the news weeks ago, now WGN America can no longer deny the cancellation of Underground after two seasons.
The axe comes despite efforts from producer Sony to find a new home for the series, with BET and OWN reportedly passing on a third season due to expensive cost of the show.
Tribune Media president and CEO Peter Kern said of the cancellation:
“Despite Underground being a terrific and important series, it no longer fits with our new direction and we have reached the difficult decision not to renew it for a third season. We are tremendously proud of this landmark series that captured the zeitgeist and made an impact on television in a way never before seen on the medium.
We thank the incomparable creators Misha Green and Joe Pokaski and the great John Legend, along with the talented creative team and cast who brought the unsung American heroes of the Underground Railroad to life. We are grateful to the loyal fans of Underground and our partners at Sony Pictures Television. It is our hope that this remarkable show finds another home and continues its stories of courage, determination and freedom.”
RIP.

What a shame, such an iconic series filled with a rich history! I really do find it hard to believe that another home couldn’t be found

I’m very disappointed, I can’t believe this show is cancelled without letting us know what happen to Rosalie, and her mother, did Noah the baby and the rest ever get to freedom? So pissed off, loved watching Underground, I just Hate when a show ends with no Closure.. Sad!

It is so ironic to me that shows of this caliber never really get a chance. This show featured fantastic actors delivering performances of rich African American history. The story line was left unfinished. There should be someone somewhere willing to pick this show up. The real housewives shows run for seasons upon end spewing their reality hodge podge; but African American history……….. I digress
