Steven Soderbergh has already seen beyond The Knick Season 3 and into Season 4.
Speaking to IndieWire, the director explained he’s already revealed the plan for the show’s potential third and fourth seasons to Cinemax:
“I told them that I’m going to do the first two years and then we are going to break out the story for seasons 3 and 4 and try and find a filmmaker or filmmakers to do this the way that I did. This is how we want to do this so that every two years, whoever comes on, has the freedom to create their universe.”
Soderbergh says new filmmakers are free to completely reinvent The Knick moving into Season 3 and beyond:
“They don’t have to shoot it the way I shoot it. They don’t have to score it the way I score it. They don’t have to cast who I’ve cast. They have maximum freedom to come in and just go, ‘I want to wipe the slate clean.’”
Assuming Cinemax renews the medical drama, Soderbergh says that Season 3 could take a year to write, meaning shooting may not begin until 2017.
“The good news is we’ve got some time. I mean, it’s not going to get shot next year. We need time to really write it out with Jack and Michael.”
Cinemax has yet to renew The Knick for Season 3, but serving as a positive sign, the network has ordered a script.
Stay tuned as we continue to monitor the status of The Knick Season 3 and beyond…
