Warning: this article contains major spoilers from the Sleepy Hollow Season 3 finale. Continue at your own risk…
The executive producers, studio, and network released this statement to EW:
“The finale featuring the tragic death of Abbie Mills was a very dramatic ending and a bold move for the show, but Sleepy Hollow has always been known for its shocking finales. We feel we provided a wonderfully poignant conclusion for Abbie and showed some of the best moments between the Witnesses that we’ve seen on-screen. We thank Nicole Beharie for bringing Abbie and Sleepy Hollow to life. We are currently discussing season 4, and should the series be picked up for another season, we have some exciting scenarios and new avenues we want to explore.”

News that Beharie will not be returning to the series comes as the Fox drama remains on the bubble as it awaits news on a potential fourth season. Sources tell THR that talks are underway to renew Sleepy Hollow, which is produced in-house by 20th Century Fox Television, with the studio already poised to turn a profit on the series. A renewal — which sources say is highly likely — comes as Fox is facing a sizable hole in its 2016-2017 schedule without juggernaut American Idol. Sources say Mison is in the midst of renegotiating his contract for season four after the actor successfully negotiated a reduced workload in season three. (Sources stress there has been no talk for a potential fourth season to be Sleepy Hollow‘s last.)

TVLINE | What can you tell me about the group that Ezra mentioned to Ichabod in the graveyard at the end of the episode? How might it manifest next season?
That’s our way in to a Season 4 that looks forward to the different understanding about what being a Witness is all about. We ran the clock out on both Abbie’s Witness relationship and how she was instrumental in bringing Ichabod into this world, and understanding and giving context and framing to what it meant to be a Witness. Then her job was done, and she did what all Witnesses apparently do, which is to pass the essence of their soul on through the bloodline. The organization… is something we’re exploring should we be fortunate enough to have a Season 4.

I refuse to watch the finale and I will never watch again. The way the writers have treated fans and the character of Abbie is so wrong and disrespectful. I have never seen a who go from glorious to just flat out sloppy in such a short time. I can’t even talk about it right now I’m so upset. They didn’t have to kill her. I love Tom Mison, but I can’t support this show after they have ripped out my heart for three years by fan baiting. It was a big F you for a large portion of their fans who have hung in there because the producer and writers have teased us only to come up with nothing. We didn’t even get a damn hug with them at the end and Ichabod never told her how he felt. Just….Done….

I love this show, I felt that they did a great job with the finale. I’m still crying. I don’t believe that Abbie was romantically interested in Ichabod and I didn’t want to see him get hurt that way. I don’t think she even called him Ichabod, it was always Crane but I could be mistaken.

The producers said the opposite and then did the opposite. He is already hurt because she’d dead. I would have rather him state his feelings. She was dead and it was vision. It’s not like she would be mean to him or he expected her to return anything. The producers constantly teased them when they had no desire to go there and that pissed off a lot of people. They should have just left it alone, like season 1, but instead they for season 2 and part of season 3 tried to kill their chem and it ruined the show for me. I think once she did. They rarely ever used their first name. We’ll never know what Abbie truly felt because they had her shut off her feelings. That whole Danny storyline was beyond contrived when she had said firmly she wanted nothing to do with him and then suddenly it’s some great love. Please. They rush everything which did a disservice to everyone involved. They didn’t even show Ichabod reacting to her statement about Danny. There were many times on this show Abbe has shown how much she loves him. I think there were times she was interested and times she wasn’t, but when you have the producer talking about their love in one sentence and then going in the opposite direction the next, it’s enough to give me whiplash. I was so sick of the back in forth in season 3, that is was hard for me to even watch it. They had them completely obsessed with each other while she was in the Catacombs. She wasn’t thinking of Danny. Everything was Crane and vice versa and they get out and it’s like it’s nothing. So, yeah, I’m bitter and I hated getting my chain yanked. I loved this show in season 1. Season 2 killed me when they completely shoved Abbie in a corner for Crane family drama, and then Season 3 they had him abandon her on the off season and then they were so disconnected for 1/2 of it, I just shook my head. You kill the chem you kill the ratings and still I held on like a fool because the EP acted like just maybe he was going to go there with them and yes, I shipped them because of their incredible chem. I’m an idiot for ever believe one word and if they would have just not gone there altogether, fans wouldn’t have held out hope they way they did and then felt so slammed by this. The whole show they were equals and the last thing she said implied she was only their to prop Ichabod and honestly, that was just another knife through my heart.

I agree , we loved the finale ,

I would never watch this show or any show on FOX. The constant baiting to draw in viewers was unforgivable. Give your viewers/fans credit, if Abbie and Icabod were partners only, stick with it and build your story on that. #CancelSleepHollow

You don’t have to watch anything. How do you know how great this show has been if you don’t watch it or anything on Fox? In England it is actually on Universal but that is not the point. The show has been excellent and killing of Abbie a sad, if genius move. I get the feeling the series was being cancelled as the finale felt that way. Lovex the last three episodes, wonderful. Hope it is renewed.

The series survived Katrina’s death. It will most likely survive Abby’s as well. From what I heard the actress wanted off the show. Given the nature of her role it is not as if they could have simply put her on a bus. See TV tropes for the reference. How many characters have they killed off so far? I watched Buffy, Angel and a few other Joss Whiedon shows. With some writers, directors etc you simply need to learn that no one is safe and anyone can die. So far they killed off
Sheriff August Corbin (however that did not stop him from sticking around an putting his two cents in)
Captain Frank Irving
Andy Brooks (also death did not stop him from hanging around)
Katrina Crane
Henry Parrish/Jeremy
