Sherlock has been in limbo for a year, now the BBC detective series is officially cancelled, at least for the foreseeable future.
Speaking to RadioTimes, series co-creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss confirmed that any potential Sherlock Season 5 is many years away, thus consigning the show to the graveyard.
Explained Moffat:
“Nobody has ever closed the door on Sherlock – we just say the same thing all the time and it gets quoted different ways.
We haven’t got an immediate plan, but I would remain surprised, given the collective enthusiasm we have for it, if we didn’t do it again.
When, I don’t know. I think maybe the time for a longer gap is upon us, I don’t know. A longer gap? They’re always long gaps!”
Added Gatiss:
“We’re doing Dracula, which is going to take two years at least. We’re not going to do Sherlock whilst we’re doing Dracula. So it’s not going to happen in the immediate future. Never say never, but no – we don’t have an idea [right now].”
While reiterating the cancellation, Moffat left the door open to a Sherlock revival in future years:
“I could see us making more Sherlocks. I could see us making Sherlocks way in the future.
It’s not the kind of show that has to come back all the time. It can revisit. Every time Sherlock comes back it’s a reunion show.”
RIP.

What sad news to hear about “Sherlock”. I really enjoyed the show. Maybe the writers fault on this one because they have used up all the good stories from Doyle. Being creative is the next thing to plagiarism. I haven’t seen a movie or TV show that didn’t take something from somebody else.
Creativity is dead. No one wants to create something out of nothing and make it work. So Sad.

It had to end sometime I guess. Always a sad day when a Sherlock passes. Credits to the actors, crew, and Mark Gatis. (I liked Dirk Gently too.)

Noooooo!

I just watched this series this year. Now you say you won’t make more for several years? How do I write to you with ideas for the show?
Teresa Maze says
Well damn! Now I have nothing to live for! So disappointed!

Dude, this is simply how a lot of British TV works. A new series happens when the creators are able to do it, not according to the demands of rigid scheduling. Trying to spin unambiguous “it’s in limbo” statements as “it’s definitely cancelled” is a weird cultural misprision.
KAREN KOVACIC says
I THINK BECAUSE BENEDICT MAYBE JUST MAYBE DOESN”T WANT TO IT BECAUSE OF HIS OTHER PROJECTS
David McCallister says
I agree with Ms Kovacic. You can do Holmes without Gillette, Rathbone, Brett, Downey, et al; but you can’t do BBC Sherlock without Cumberbatch.

No!!! We are somewhat new to Netflix and have recently binge watched the four seasons of Sherlock. This is awful. We had our fingers crossed in hopes of it continuing. There’s just too much for people to choose from in television entertainment for something to last long. I hate to see smart, clean and fun programs end.

This for me is One of the best shows on Television, cancelled? It figures! but you can trust the bbc to find crap for the rest of the year!!! and they want you to pay money for nothing!!!
Lillith says
Is it actually cancelled? Or does this just mean that there is no S5 scheduled for now? This info seems to clash with the interviews that state “we will come back, but not for a while”…. I think it’s listed as cancelled because there are no moves to set a date? At least I hope so…

Not surprised, but it’s a shame. Too few too far apart anyway.
