A day after Shadowhunters was cancelled after three seasons, Freeform has offered an explanation as to why there wont be a fourth season.
According to Deadline, Freeform programming chief Karey Burke insisted the network were “very happy creatively” with Shadowhunters. However, economics, unlined by streaming partner Netflix pulling out of the show, resulted in its demise:
The decision to cancel the series was “purely economic,” said Karey Burke, EVP, Programming and Development, during a media luncheon held today in New York by the Disney-owned network. One key element, Burke explained, was that German company Constantin Film, which had co-produced the show with Freeform, lost its output deal with Netflix. It then asked Freeform to increase its investment in the show. “We went back and forth with them but ultimately we just couldn’t make the economics work,” she said. “We were very happy creatively with it.”
Are you still reeling from the cancellation of Shadowhunters? Do you agree with Freeform’s decision? Hoping for a revival elsewhere?
Stay tuned as Shadowhunters slips slowly to its cancellation graveyard, with the two-hour series finale airing spring 2019…

I guess Netflix needs the money for the Obama series. Just another reason to stop paying for netflex especially when they stop showing shows that are liked.
