Netflix has ordered a Latino family remake of Norman Lear’s classic 9-season sitcom One Day at a Time, with a 13-episode straight-to-series order, Deadline confirms:
The reimagining of the 1975 series was written by How I Met Your Mother alumna Gloria Calderon Kellett and sitcom veteran Mike Royce (Everybody Loves Raymond). The multi-camera comedy revolves around a Cuban-American family, centering on a recently separated, former military mom who is navigating a new single life while raising her radical teenaged daughter and socially adept tween son, with the “help” of her old school Cuban-born mom and a friends- without-benefits building manager named Schneider. [Rita] Moreno will play the grandmother.

Well the description sure does NOT sound like One Day at a Time. Perhaps the ONLY similarity is that it’s a recently divorced mother??? Ann Romano wasn’t latina. She had 2 daughters, no sons. She was trying to gain a career in the late 70s / early 80s when women were still battling the “homemaker” stereotype and outright sexism. Her mother only appeared in a few episodes and was NOT a staple of the show. But hey.. she did have a really odd, low class, building superintendent named Schneider.. yeah.. sure… take 1 aspect and call it a remake. Netflix out of ideas already?? Shame. And Moreno.. yuck. That woman could never act.
