The impact of the recent floods across the north of England, the burgeoning refugee camp in Calais some claim is becoming a major security threat to London, and the Geordie Shore star who’s been catapulted into the big league after becoming Queen of the Jungle: these are just some of the stories featured in the new series of BBC current affairs series Inside Out.
The programme is back on Monday 11 January for nine weeks of agenda-setting news stories, fascinating features and exclusive interviews.
There are 11 different versions of Inside Out made by the BBC’s regional programming teams based in England. Each version of the programme is first shown regionally on BBC One at 7.30pm on Monday before going onto BBC iPlayer for 30 days.
This series sees three Inside Out programmes focus on the recent flooding that’s devastated large parts of northern England. In Yorkshire, weather presenter Paul Hudson asks if some parts of the region are fighting a losing battle against the elements.
Inside Out London discovers why the biggest threat to London’s security may come from the growing refugee camp in Calais; Inside Out East Midlands hears from the Jewish refugee who fled Nazi Germany to join the RAF and take to the skies to defend his new homeland; while on Inside Out West Midlands, former Top Gear presenter and veteran petrol-head Angela Rippon investigates whether the law should be changed around older drivers taking to the road. At 70, she takes on a younger and a middle-aged driver to see who is really safest behind the wheel.
Other stories across the country featuring in this series include:
Hear the country’s only one-handed professional pianist perform a specialist concerto for the first time in over 60 years. (Inside Out East)
Jungle Queen – ex-Geordie Shore star Vicky Pattison soaks up the glory of her I’m A Celebrity win. (Inside Out North East and Cumbria)
Star Wars – hear why one of the key designers from the original star wars abandoned the Hollywood glamour to live in virtual obscurity in Cheltenham. (Inside Out West)
David Holdsworth, BBC Controller of English regions, says: “No news story resonates more with the viewer than the one taking place right on their doorstep.“Inside Out has been so successful because it produces fantastic journalism that brings viewers to the heart of the issues that matter in their community each week.
“Over the next nine weeks, be prepared to hear about untold events and characters that have shaped the past, ongoing issues, and significant developments that will influence the future.
“As we enter the 14th year of Inside Out on our screens, its role uncovering big stories and exploring the issues viewers care about is as vital as ever.”
Each edition is hosted by a different presenter in each region. They include former Blue Peter presenter Andy Akinwolere (BBC West Midlands), BBC regional news presenter Diane Oxberry (BBC North West) and the journalist Matthew Wright (BBC London).
This series will also include contributions from some of the UK’s favourite TV personalities, including Angela Rippon and Quentin Willson, who will help to tell the untold stories of each region’s communities, economies, heritage, history and wildlife.
