Patrick Holland announces recommission of BBC Two’s Hospital
Following the success of the critically acclaimed Hospital, Patrick Holland, Channel Editor for BBC Two, has commissioned a further two series.
- “With its nail-biting plot twists and powerful emotional pull, this new six-part series could pass as a top-drawer medical drama” – Daily Telegraph
- “At the heart of it was a superb documentary that had you holding your breath one minute and crying your eyes out the next” – Daily Mirror
- “It’s brilliant and brave” – The New Statesman
- “…an extraordinary series” – The Times
The first series, filmed at hospitals across Imperial College Healthcare Trust London at the end of 2016, averaged 2.5m viewers per episode. It brought stories of national importance to the front of the news agenda, including the debate around health tourism and the chronic shortage of beds, not only at Imperial but also at hospitals across the UK.
Patrick Holland says: “The first series of Hospital was everything I want BBC Two to be. It is timely, brilliantly made and challenging TV. It was editorially brave to make a series with such a short turnaround but it felt so timely for the audience. It was creatively ambitious, attracting the very best team of committed filmmakers to produce it, and it wasn’t afraid to embrace complexity, engaging the audience with powerful personal dramas that illuminate the challenges faced by the NHS today. I am delighted to announce further episodes over the coming year.”
Simon Dickson, Executive Producer at Label1, says: “Hospital is, and always will be, unique among medical documentaries because of how we make it. Edited and broadcast within a few short weeks of filming being completed, it’s Britain’s first fast turnaround blue-chip documentary series. The audience figures prove that people crave the freshness and insight it offers. Label1 is delighted that the Trust and the BBC is re-committing to it so significantly.”
Future series will look at other areas within the NHS, including maternity and mental health care provision. It will also extend beyond the corridors of the hospitals to look at primary and social care, to understand in greater detail the complex relationship between them and the NHS, at a time when almost no area is immune to the unprecedented pressures.
Michelle Dixon, Director of Communications at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, says: “Hospital has given us the opportunity to show the amazing care and commitment of our staff as well as the growing challenges we face as we respond to the changing needs and demands of our patients. It’s so important to develop a shared understanding of what’s happening in the NHS and what’s at stake. While the first series has provided a great insight to a whole range of issues and services, there is still much more to see.”
Hospital is made by Label1, and Executive Produced by Simon Dickson and Lorraine Charker-Phillips. It was commissioned by Patrick Holland, Channel Editor, BBC Two, and Danny Horan, Commissioning Editor, Documentaries.
