As Game Of Thrones hurtles towards its end game, the final seasons could have shorter runs.
Speaking to Variety, the showrunners say they’re mulling the possibility of wrapping the series in 13 more episodes after Season 6 – seven episodes for Season 7 and six for the eighth and likely final season:
“I think we’re down to our final 13 episodes after this season. We’re heading into the final lap,” said Benioff. “That’s the guess, though nothing is yet set in stone, but that’s what we’re looking at.”
A HBO spokesperson said:
Any conversations about the end of Game of Thrones and the number of episodes of future seasons is purely speculative,” an HBO spokesperson said in a statement. “As is customary, HBO will sit with Dan and David to discuss the details once a decision has been made to go forward with season seven.”
For his part, HBO president Michael Lombardo would love the series to last another six seasons:
“[Two more seasons is] my understanding from them right now, those have been the conversations we’ve had. Because where these narratives go, it feels like another two years to them. As a television executive, as a fan, do I wish they said another six years? I do.”
Stay tuned as we continue to monitor the future status of Game Of Thrones…
