BBC One has cancelled Dickensian after one series (season).
Per RadioTimes, the broadcaster has decided not to renew the period drama for Series 2.
The BBC confirmed Dickensian‘s demise via statement:
“We are incredibly proud of Dickensian and would like to thank all those involved in such an ambitious series. We sometimes have to make difficult decisions to make room for new shows and it won’t be returning for a second series.”
The drama’s creator, Tony Jordan, added:
“I am disappointed that we will not be making a second series of Dickensian. We are hugely proud of what we achieved in the first series of Dickensian and would like to thank everyone who helped us create a truly special and unique drama.”
RIP.

I am quite surprised that this fantastic program was not renewed. I hope that the BBC will reconsider their decision, or perhaps, another station will decide to pick Dickensian up for a second series. I enjoyed watching it and was so very much looking forward series 2! Very sad!

The BBC know audiences like this series. They want the licence fee increased, so that’s why they are cancelling all the programs people like. Blackmail comes to mind!!!

A clever, entertaining and stylish programme. Should not be dropped. BBC seem to be running scared when it comes to renewing good programmes – time will come when the public and Government will decide that repeats do not warrant the licence fee and that advertising, like all the other stations is the only option.

I have to say that it never occurred to me that there was any prospect of a second series. The storylines which were all based on events prior to those in the novels were all completed. A second series would have required a massive change from the original intentions.

Tony Jordan, Drama Creator, at the BBC. Yet again, Sir, yet again, you and the BBC behaves like a child, NOT able to finish, what was and could have been a fantastic season of Christmas drama’s, but auntie baby knows best with, our, the tax payers money. Is it, maybe, because the BBC could not justify the cost, without an ‘American’ Partner. Would it not be possible to sell or move, as Red Dwarf, successfully achieved with the BBC partner company ‘Dave’, at least attempting a similar company, say to UKTV Drama. By not at least attempting a second season is the real waste of tax payers money – and continuously running one season shows, with setup cost etc., etc. … will only lead to increased licence fees. If the BBC started to make real commitments to “their” shows, then they can start to justify the fee or does the BBC have a real death’nell and a unspoken desire for a funded corporation with advertising or, more likely a PBS model, with feast and famine, depending on which administration is in Office. The BBC needs to start making real commitments with our licence fee and stop being frivolous and so arrogant.
