UPDATED: NBC wont be reviving Coach after all. The network has cancelled the sitcom, which was given a 13-episode straight-to-series order earlier this year, Deadline reports:
The show’s cast and producers have started getting the news this evening. The decision comes after weeks of rumblings about creative issues on the project, which only has filmed a pilot episode. Original star Craig T. Nelson toplined the new show, written by the original series creator Barry Kemp.
While Coach had a 13-episode order, NBC opted to film one episode and take time to reevaluate the project before proceeding with the other 12 episodes. I hear besides Nelson, who is guaranteed 13 episodic fees, all other cast members are being paid for the produced episode only. I hear response to the reboot had been mixed at best, with sources indicating that it felt dated.
It’s been confirmed that studio Universal TV will be taking Coach out to other outlets, with Netflix thought to be an ideal platform to take the series forward ala Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

Rather than “Coach” they should have just retitled it to “Craig T. Nelson Needs Money Due to a Failing Career” He’s been relegated to pretty minor roles as voice talent or supporting characters since the original “Coach” went off the air after 9 seasons. Should have learned to save a bit, Craig.

Craig T. Nelson was one of the regulars on “Parenthood” for 5 seasons. I don’t think that sounds like a failing career. I was looking forward to a sequal

Being a “regular” means he’s a supporting character, like I posted. He wasn’t the primary star. He hasn’t had a primary role in anything since the original run of Coach. I’m not down on the guy. Just saying either he isn’t offered good scripts or his choice of roles has been more minor. I see really absolutely no reason to revive a sitcom that went off the air nearly 10 years ago. I mean it had a good 9 season run. The only possible reason for the attempt at reviving it is either A) the desire to cash in on that previous success, or B) the network has zero ideas for new show, or C) both. I liked the original Coach… but bringing it back is just ludicrous.

Not true. After coach he starred on the District from 2000-2004 and starred in The Incredibles in 2004 before landing in Parenthood
HA! says
uhm.. the Incredibles didn’t STAR anyone… voice talent isn’t “starring” in anything. And okay.. 4 years in “the District” — never saw it. Hasn’t EVERY tv actor/actress done at least one standard, formulaic, cop/legal show?? I mean the networks pump out 3 or 4 new ones every year. They’ve got to fill that junk with someone. Still not what I’d call a “great” role for any actor.

I was too. I loved Coach and Craig T. Nelson. Very disappointed.

Ha! You are (well how can I say this nicely) well ignorant. He had a great role on Parenthood. Obviously, you have never seen it or even heard of it. He did a great job. And maybe because Coach did so well long ago, some say it had some possibilities to go with it further. I would have enjoyed at least checking it out. Too bad.

I’m with you Karen Fan! Ha! just doesn’t seem able to admit when he’s incorrect in his assessment. For someone who claims “not to be down on the guy”, he is sure doing his best to make Nelson look bad.
Ha!, you might want to check out IMDB.com before announcing someone has a failed career & needs money. He’s no Clooney but he hasn’t done bad for himself. For the record, “The Incredibles” is acting? Just because you cannot see someone’s physical appearance doesn’t mean he is not acting. In fact, I would venture to say it’s even more difficult because you cannot include body language to help convey your thoughts or feelings. And in case you haven’t noticed, successful tv shows, movies, even plays are often remade to great success.
Look, no one likes to be corrected but maybe you can say you just possibly “jumped the gun” with your comments!
