With Castle‘s fate still being fought over by the Cancellation Reaper and renewal gods, the procedural’s showrunners have crafted alternate endings for the upcoming Season 8 finale.
Showrunner Terence Paul Winter tells TVLine they’ve prepared both a conclusive ending in the event of the show getting cancelled, and a cliffhanger should Castle return for a ninth (and possibly final) season:
“We have one ending, a cliffhanger that we’re excited about, because we believe in Castle and we believe that ABC will hopefully, hopefully bring us back.”
Should ABC renew Castle for Season 9, the show will account for two possible scenarios dictated by ongoing contract negotiations – one with the current cast and one with an altered assemble, co-showrunner Alexi Hawley explains:
“Obviously our hope is that we come back ‘all hands on deck’ for Season 9, but everybody needs to make deals. There’s stuff up in the air, so we are trying to leave it in a very dynamic way which leaves open the possibility that maybe the show won’t come back in the same form next season — although, again, we really hope that it does.”
On how the show will resolve itself if the Cancellation Reaper is victorious and the Season 8 finale becomes the series finale, Hawley tells the outlet:
“We have crafted a final scene that would exist only if we weren’t coming back, one that we don’t really want to get into—”
Stay tuned as we continue to monitor the status of Castle Season 9…
