UPDATE – It’s now official, ITV has cancelled Beowulf after one season. Original story follows…
Despite plans for the series to run five seasons, ITV has reportedly cancelled Beowulf: Return to the Shieldlands after just one.
Per The Sun, the UK broadcaster has axed the fantasy drama, which airs on Esquire in the US, due to low ratings and wont be renewing the series for Season 2:
Now insiders have told how it will not return after the end of its first series, which has another five episodes to air. A source said: “ITV had huge hopes for Beowulf.
And there was a massive push last year about what a big deal it was for the network and that there were plans for five series.
But viewers slammed it and all the talk internally has been about what a disaster it has been. It is fair to say it won’t be back.”
ITV aren’t confirming the cancellation just yet, with a spokeswoman saying a decision has yet to be reached:
“It’s standard practice for ITV to decide upon the recommission of a series once it’s fully aired.
“Consequently, we have no decision currently about Beowulf: Return to the Shieldlands.”
Stay tuned as we await official evidence of Beowulf‘s cancellation, or otherwise…
RIP.

The least surprising news of the year so far. Truly awful. Can’t imagine that anyone is still watching it.

I watch it and like it. As for ratings…..Esquire channel? Who’s even heard of Esquire channel before? I found it by luck or accident and only because of Beowulf.
Mary says
That’s true for me as well.
Lynn Neumann says
I like Beowulf and was excited for it to air. I have not been disappointed. Sometimes its nice to just watch a show for entertainment. I am sad they are considering cancelling this show. I often wonder who the heck they survey.
Casey Kamm says
I enjoy this series, But how many people have heard of the Esquire channel. It should be on BBC or Esquire needs to do some advertising.
Annita Davis says
Agree 100%
Jim McMunn says
I enjoyed the Series Beowulf tremendously. It was a rare treat to see a decent series that dealt with fables again. Sorry to see it go. It might had better results on a more recognizable network like USA or Syfy. Instead of Esquire.
Rheal LeSieur says
I found the series started a bit slow with the first episode but enjoyed it a lot as it gained momentum. Very sorry to see it go.
Susie says
I love this show, hope they don’t decide to axe it!
Carol says
My husband and I love this show. We have heard it was going to be cancelled, and are very disappointed. We love these fantasy shows.
Dave says
Come on, ITV. Reconsider about bringing Beowulf back for a second season and don’t cancel it until season five as planned, please. Because the last episode ended on a cliffhanger. I want to see what happens next. If ITV doesn’t reconsider, maybe, another network should. I think BBC America or Syfy or Netflix or Amazon should save Beowulf.
Annita Davis says
I love this show. It’s cheesy and cheap but it’s just what I need from time to time. I won’t watch esquire TV anymore!
Haleema Daniels says
I didn’t know it was to be cancelled. What a great disappointment. I was looking forward to what. happens next. Would it be possible for another network to pick Beowolf up? It would a shame to lost it. This series is very exciting.
TheMom says
Very disappointed. Was looking forward to more. We happened upon it by chance – lack of advertising and placement on an obscure channel didn’t do it any favors. I hope a different network picks it up.
