Is hell catching up with the devil? FOX has slashed the second season of Lucifer to 18 episodes, dumping the final four of the 22-filmed episodes to Season 3.
As a result, the upcoming third season will likely comprise 22-26 episodes, showrunner Jon Henderson explains:
For #Lucifer, we will be airing the last 5 episodes of season 2 in May! 5 you say?? But the show is 22?? Where are my remaining 4 episodes?
— Joe Henderson (@Henderson_Joe) March 23, 2017
Well, we designed this season to be an 18 episode arc because we originally were going to be 18 episodes. But then we got 4 more! Surprise!
— Joe Henderson (@Henderson_Joe) March 23, 2017
So we decided to create four episodes that let us play around a bit. Dig deeper into the character stories, play with format a bit, etc.
— Joe Henderson (@Henderson_Joe) March 23, 2017
We didn't know whether they'd air this season or next until now. Now we do. So bad news is you need to wait for them. And I know that sucks.
— Joe Henderson (@Henderson_Joe) March 23, 2017
But the good news is we'll have at LEAST 22 episodes of Lucifer next season. Maybe 26?? Probably 24? Hard to say this early #Lucifer

We're doing four episodes that stand on their own, but also pick up plots we've introduced and bring in new stuff we'll play with season 3 https://t.co/AcUryFzZ2m
— Joe Henderson (@Henderson_Joe) March 23, 2017
Honestly, they love the show, they just didn't have anywhere to air the extra episodes until the fall. https://t.co/Oziy9LhmAS
— Joe Henderson (@Henderson_Joe) March 23, 2017
We know where they'll slot season 3, and how they'll affect story/etc. They won't feel very standalone because they are so character focused https://t.co/9DeSxdpwPH
— Joe Henderson (@Henderson_Joe) March 23, 2017
End of season 2 is still exactly what we planned. And it is CRAZY awesome, if you don't mind me saying so. #Lucifer https://t.co/uVwBBwPt0d

With those four episodes described as ‘standalone’ yet also having significance to the larger plot, it remains to be seen how disruptive the move is. While Lucifer can be described as both serialized and procedural, chopping up the episode order/narrative doesn’t bode well for a show that has any degree of serialization.
Is everything really as rosy as Henderson makes out, or are these the first real signs of trouble for Lucifer?
Stay tuned as we monitor the cancel/renew status of Lucifer SEASON 4…

Very entertaining and fun show. Of course, that means it gets cancelled by these network idiots. It’s no wonder why so many have abandoned commercial tv for cable.

I agree with all of the comments.. Lucifer is a DIFFERENT kind of show, not the usual cops and robbers chasing the bad guys show. It is very funny and there is plenty of room to expand the characters backgrounds and interactions.

I did not start watching this until season 1 was almost over when my sister told me to watch it. Thankfully, I was able to download the episodes on Directvs On Demand.
It took me 3 weeks to start watching. I thought it was some satanical show that I could not imagine my sister even watching. She kept telling me to just watch the pilot. I started watching from the pilot and could not stop. I would sit up and watch 3 to 4 episodes at a time- The On Demand recordings would not let me bypass the commercials so that was 3 to 4 hours into the middle of the night. My OCD kicked in.
As Rachel stated above, it is a DIFFERENT kind of show. I got my mother in law to start watching it as well. Like me, she did not seem to want to watch it. It was hard to describe, it is a crime show, but not a typical crime show- we have enough NCIS shows, this was so different.
I record all of my shows on DVR because I hate commercials and I do not have a lot of time to watch tv. I am really not a tv person. Thankfully, with the DVR recorded shows, I can bypass the commercials. I am concerned now because I do not think the recordings are counted in the ratings, I will have to find out. If this is true, I will have to turn on the tv in our spare room. I do not want this show to end due to low ratings because people record it. I never sit down to watch tv so I end up deleting most of the shows I record. I purchased season 1 on VUDU and my husband surprised me with season 2 on VUDU so when Season 2 is over, I will have the complete seasons. I LOVE THIS SHOW BECAUSE IT IS DIFFERENT AND MAKES ME LAUGH. I love to laugh and I love all of the characters, especially Lucifer and Trixie.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE FOX, KEEP RENEWING THIS SHOW. Not everyone watches every new show out there. There is not enough time. The word of mouth is how many people hear about a great show. Another one of my favorite shows has cancelled prior to Season 1 finishing and I just saw 4 episodes and was hooked. Networks are not giving new shows a chance, especially when they slot them in a guaranteed fail slot, like against football….DUH!!!. Thank fully, FOX renewed this show. I am sure there are other people that would love this show once they heard about it. More people watch other networks so they miss the commercials of this show so I think word of mouth is going to be the best way to keep it alive.
