London Spy will not capture a second season. However, rather than the network summoning the Reaper, it’s the creator who has decided to end the series after just a solitary season.
Speaking to the Guardian, Tom Rob Smith confirmed that he’s cancelled the spy drama, despite the BBC wanting to continue for Season 2.
The BBC have asked and my instinct is that it probably shouldn’t continue. If you’ve lost the two central relationships, who would you be spinning Danny through? I preferred Charlotte and Ben going head to head, I don’t know whether they’d have the same spark as friends.
He added:
“I don’t have any desire to explore the real-world spy consequences of what was going on. It was a relationship drama refracted through the prism of the spy genre.”
Once Danny had learnt that his love story was real – which was the key question to answer, for me – and re-evaluated his relationship with Scottie through this world, it was whether to close everything off or decide he’d found someone new and gone on this new adventure.”
Unless the BBC can change Smith’s mind, London Spy will remain a one-and-done cancellation, albeit on its own terms.
We’ll monitor the cancellation graveyard just in case…
RIP.

They should really think of many possibilities of a season 2 the possibilities are there due to the “loose ends”. It has just aired in U.S. BBC. After watching episode one I was hooked and I am a very harsh critic of today’s world of Television however I watched all 5 episodes following the premiere online. I am 29 y/o male in southern California with a B.S. in Epidemiology currently working in pharmaceutical research and furthering my education in health field. If BBC and or Tom Robert Smith needs some fresh perspectives on how the series should continue I would be more than happy to share my ideas. The last episode was a bit of a letdown. Nevertheless I believe Smith was not going for that happy ending, that numerous generations that have been brainwashed by Disney have been conditioned to expect in our society. I agree not every story should end happily ever after, because that is just not how life is. However the last episodes were so disconnected to the main characters identities that there must be more to this story it would be a shame if Smith is too afraid to continue the series because he wants to discontinue the opportunity out of fear of failure or fear of the risk being too great that he may not be able to live up to the previous episodes.

You obviously do not have a clue how the creative process of writing a story works. It has nothing to do with the writers not having content or not “thinking of possibilities”. Content can usually always be expanded upon, whether it should be or not. The creator felt the story was done and ended it where he wanted it to end. He could of easily dragged it out, but instead he stayed true to his vision; which, in my opinion, is the mark of a true artist (whether it’s an author, painter, sculptor, musician etc…it’s all art). The last thing I’m sure Smith needs is someone who can barely construct a comprehensive sentence giving him advice or ideas.
