BBC Three Digital Controller Damian Kavanagh has explained the decision to axe Family Guy (which moved to ITV2 in the UK) from the network’s roster as a desire to invest in emerging British comedy shows over US acquisitions, per Digital Spy:
“I’m a massive fan of Family Guy – it’s a great show and it’s got a hell of a lot of attitude about it.
However, when money is in short supply – and on BBC Three we’ve had to think long and hard and rationalise exactly what we’re going to do – I find it quite hard to justify [the money we’re spending on it].
“In a way, you can’t on give talent very early breaks on BBC One and Two. Look at the talent we’ve given breaks to [on BBC Three],” he said.
Going forward, I want to support young British talent and I want to invest in that. If I was going to keep Family Guy, it would have swallowed up a lot of our budget.
Family Guy is currently chasing a 15th season renewal on FOX. Stay tuned…
