What would have happened had ABC not cancelled Castle? Per TVLine:
According to sources, one scenario had Kate surviving the season-ending shootout, but everyone — Rick included — would think her dead.

If this scenario is true, that would have been more stupid than the LOKSAT story. A secret mission? Witsec? Anything to keep her alive and try to satisfy the Kate Beckett fan club. So glad it got canceled.

This scenario is so dumb, that I am almost lost for words. If this was the best they could come up with, then it’s for the best it got cancelled.Imagine how they ruined one of the best shows on TV…just so sad.

If they had not canceled it, there would be a lot of happy people!!! Why would any network cancel a show that was in the Nielsen top 25 every week; sometimes even in the top 10?
They are morons & have no interest in loyalty towards the viewers even though we had it for Castle!!! With so many channels & other venues for viewers to watch, they might want to reconsider that strategy!
ExCastlefan says
You do realise that Beckett would not have been in S9 because ABC Studios did not renew Stana and Tamala’s contracts, so the likelihood of it continuing in the top 25 would have diminished dramatically when a lot of unhappy people stopped watching because the core premise of the show had been destroyed, presumably in favour of Castle P.I. with his super sleuth daughter and irritating new sidekick. Fortunately ABC Entertainment chose to cancel the show, and inadvertently preserved the legacy of the first seven seasons, which otherwise would have been tarnished by Beckett’s death (the most likely outcome of the cliff hanger), or this other dumb idea to send her off on a secret mission with everyone believing she was dead.

What a totally weird ending. Was that a Halmark card at the end or the “heavenly” scene that some have suggested. Boo to the writers. Boo to the actress for leaving and ending the show and book to Fallion for going along with such a stupid ending FECHK! This was definitely not “shiny”!!!
ExCastlefan says
You do realise that Stana wasn’t even asked to renew her contract, together with Tamala Jones, by ABC Studios, so she didn’t exactly leave of her own accord. If the show had been renewed the season finale would have ended with them both bleeding out, and in the S9 premier it would probably have been revealed that Beckett had not survived.
ExCastlefan says
The news leaked on Apr 18 that Stana wasn’t being asked back for a S9, and all the prediction sites reckoned that the show would be renewed right up until the cancellation announcement was made on May 12. So the cancellation was not the fault of the actress, however there was a considerable reaction from some of the fans to that news (#NoStanaNoCastle trended on twitter on Apr 18 when the news broke) which may have had a little influence on the Network’s decison to ultimately cancel the show, so you could say that whoever reckoned that the show could go on without Stana is the one who should shoulder most of the blame for the cancellation, although the show was weakening in the ratings and becoming more and more expensive to produce anyway, which is probably the main reason behind the cancellation.

The writers were way off with this stupid ending! But then, again the last two seasons have been pretty bad compared to Seasons One thru Six. I wonder if they will be putting both this ending and their “alternate” ending on the Season Eight DVD/BluRay? Not to mention that I wonder how many people will be buying Season Eight? I doubt that I will, I may not even buy Season Seven. I think Season Six was my last purchase for Castle.
ExCastlefan says
I think you’ve already seen both endings. The season ending would have been them bleeding out holding hands as the cliff hanger Hawley so wanted to have, and the “Seven years later” scene was the series ending that the showrunners hoped would never see the light of day. It might have been better if they had not used the original planned season ending because in the circumstances that scene where Caleb Brown turns up and shoots them added nothing to the episode as it could have been left that they had beaten Loksat when Beckett incapacitated Mason Wood in the killroom, after a short scene back at the precinct where one of them says something like “We’re safe now, let’s start a family” they could have either left it there or then added the “seven years later”. I’ve read where some people believe they actually die and the scene with the children is their last thoughts of what might have been, so Hawley seems to have managed to leave some confusion in his wake, despite the “seven years later” caption, which I take to mean that they did survive and the final scene was real.

That ending would have been even weirder, I start to believe that it is good that they have cancelled the show when they did. First of all, Katic was fired so no Beckett and then having her to disappear it would have been stupid. This way at least the show got the ending it deserved. To be honest the show was good until the end of season 7, after season 8 started it just got worse and worse from episode to episode.
Sad to see a show that I have been a fan of for the last eight years to be cancelled, however I do like the way it has ended and the creators decided to stop continuing the production after they fired Katic and Jones.

It was a great tv series and those that cancelled it must of been on drugs or had their heads so far up their collective butts they couldn’t do their job properly!
