Castle boss Alexi Hawley is planning to wrap up the series at the end of Season 8 while also planning for Season 9 amid uncertainty about the show’s future, as Deadline reports:
The show is currently shooting Episode 15, the script for Episode 16 is being finalized, and the writers are breaking Episode 17. “We’re definitely getting to a point where we need to figure out what Episodes 21 and 22 are, which is why we are having these discussions now,” Hawley said.
Still, Hawley and Winter will not leave fans hanging. “Everything that has been set up will come to a conclusion this season,” Winter said. That includes the Lock Set mystery.
While they have their hands full with Season 8, Hawley and Winter have an idea where they want to go in Season 9, which is return to the show’s roots after a serialized eighth season.
“This season was a little bit of a transition, getting Castle into the PI office and setting that world up for him to give him that drive,” Hawley said. “We wanted to wrap up a lot of the threads of different conspiracies, Beckett’s mother’s murder, Castle’s missing time. We wanted by the end of Season 8 to have gotten through all those — hopefully in a compelling and satisfying way –so Season 9 can be more about the case of the week, going back to the fun of solving the case of the week and not have the luggage of past conspiracies.”
Stay tuned as we continue to monitor the status of Castle Season 9…

I want to hear something about the desires of the leads to continue if it gets renewed. That will tell me if I even want to unzip my heart after it’s been sealed by a final Caskett moment. I can’t take the gut wrenching loss I’ve felt since Season 8 started. I’m a late comer to Castle and have watched all 8 1/2 seasons almost 3 x since Sep. The growth of Stana’s acting has been amazing. She has got to continue either as Beckett or something else on TV. I know she wants to do Indy films, but that won’t keep the fans happy. Twist her arm, keep Beckett in the story and even if occasionally on the show.

Liz, I agree with you completely about keeping it going. Unique show.Started out as Castle & Beckett & now Caskett. Can’t go back, but forward as it should be, together, that’s what makes the show along with all the talented cast. They have a right to personal lives I know, but hope they will give the fans more seasons of their talents.Hope the writers agree.

Clearly there are 2 issues at play. Do the leads want the story to continue and stay in the game, or do they (one or the other) want to go it alone. The web has shown some hints of the answers and by their silence I tend to believe it. I could accept cancellation if I at least know “they” both want it. Then we can just blame in on the producers for screwing up the story this year causing the watchers to dwindle, but if they can pull it together (story wise) then convince the leads to stay on even if for only 1 more season then they do the story justice, bring it to a happy ending conclusion and the fans can accept it and move on.

My vote is for a quick ending. Though I’ve watched every episode since “FLOWERS…, many a number of times, my heart has not been it since the disaster that was 6 X 23. I think that the CASKETT faithful have given the various production teams ample opportunity to get the show back on it’s original track. But they have been unable OR UNWILLING to do that. When I watch an episode as brilliant as “Flowers for your Grave”, “Knockout”, “Kill Shot” or “Recoil”, and compare it with ANYTHING from the last 2 seasons, I feel really down. I will not give up or fail to watch, but if this is what they have to offer I think both of our brilliant stars would be wise to walk away and not sully their reputations trying to make a silk purse.
